Trying to find vegan options at fast food restaurants could probably be an olympic sport, it’s that hard! Even ‘safe’ options like fries or baked potatoes may seem vegan, but they often actually are not.
This is why we have done all of the research for you! With our easy guides, you can eat out without having to worry about what is in your food and how it was made.
In this guide, we will go through all of the vegan options at popular burger restaurant chain, Whataburger. Despite their speciality being burgers, as a vegan, you don’t have to go hungry!
7 Vegan Options at Whataburger
If you are wondering which menu items cater to your needs at Whataburger, then we have 7 different options for you to pick from.
Good news, vegans! The fries at Whataburger are completely vegan friendly! After consulting the restaurant’s website, the fries are cooked in ZTF Whataburger liquid shortening, including Soybean Oil, which means that they are 100% vegan.
In addition, you can top these fries with Whataburger’s Spicy or Fancy Ketchup, which are both vegan friendly.
However, the fries are cooked in a shared fryer, so there is a risk of cross contamination with non vegan products such as meat and dairy. If this goes against your beliefs or your dietary requirements, then steer clear of any fried products from Whataburger.
When it comes to any fast food restaurant, the garden salad is typically a perfectly safe vegan option, and Whataburger’s Garden Salad is no different!
The standard garden salad at Whataburger is served with lettuce, grape tomatoes, shredded cheese and carrots. All you have to do is order without any meat or cheese, and it will be 100% vegan friendly.
What is even better is that Whataburger has an array of vegan toppings that you can add on to make this salad even more delicious. For instance, you can add the grilled peppers, onions, jalapenos, avocado or even the fire roasted mushrooms for a burst of flavor.
Then, you can top it with a vegan dressing such as the Herb Vinaigrette or the Balsamic Vinaigrette.
One of the most exciting items on the menu that are vegan are the hash browns! According to the Whataburger website, these are cooked in Whataburger’s STF liquid shortening and include Soybean oil, like the fries.
However, they are also cooked in a shared fryer, so there is the risk of cross contamination with non vegan foods.
If you are anything like us, then you have to have dessert after a meal! We all have a little bit of a sweet tooth, sometimes! Luckily, the Fruit Chews are a vegan dessert that you can choose from.
Whilst apple slices are not the most exciting item on the Whataburger menu, they are completely vegan friendly, and can serve as a great dessert for a vegan.
Whataburger also has many vegan drinks options available on the menu for you to choose from. This includes all Coke and Dr. Pepper products, along with their coffee and teas.
If you visit at breakfast time, you can also enjoy the Simply Orange Juice, as this is also vegan friendly.
Create Your Own Vegan Sandwich
You can actually create your own vegan dish at Whataburger. This one is not strictly on the menu, but the restaurant will surely accommodate your needs if you request it. All you have to do is pick your own bread options, and add some vegan toppings and you have a vegan Whataburger sandwich!
The breads that you can choose from are the Texas Toast, the Bun and Flour Tortilla, all of which are 100% vegan. You can also toast your bread as this option is also vegan friendly.
Cover your Whataburger sandwich in either the Mustard, Fancy Ketchup or Spicy Ketchup for an extra burst flavor, and then you can choose your toppings. The vegan topping options are:
- Grilled peppers
- Fire roasted mushrooms
Whilst Whataburger does not have a wide range of vegan options, you can still eat at the restaurant. However, you will have to be in the mood for some french fries, garden salad or a veggie sandwich customized by yourself!
