I believe structure is important to work with, but I am skeptical when someone comes to me saying “you have to…” as soon as someone says this, I think “okay, this idea obviously works for YOU” and from there I decide whether it makes sense to me and whether I would like to try it out for myself.
So I was skeptical when I ran across this YouTube video about the 12 Foods You Should Never Eat According to the Experts.
I checked it out, however, and was pleasantly surprised! So I am sharing the 12 Foods to Avoid, according to 10 different experts interviewed by John Kohler from OKRAW at the 2013 Woodstock Festival.
Below you can find each expert’s personal no-nos, whether they are products falsely claiming to be raw, foods that do not assimilate well into the expert’s body, or a simple guide to helping you get in touch with what you don’t need! I have listed the food to avoid, the expert who claims it, and the number of years they have been raw!
1. CACAO (or “crackao”) – DurianRider from 30bananasaday.com (11 years raw)
When he comes across them in Malaysia or Australia, DurianRider pulls them off the tree, eats the white flesh and spits out the cacao bean so that it can grow again. Cacao contains Theobromine, classified botanically as a neurotoxin that releases adrenaline (which is felt as a buzz in the body).
2. UNRIPE fruit (typically bananas) – Grant Campbell from RawAussieAthlete.com (8 years raw)
Unripe fruit is starchy, ripe fruit is sweeter and the complex sugars change into simple sugars in ripe fruit, which makes it easier to digest and provides more nutrition.
3. CASHEWS – Megan Elizabeth from MeganElizabeth.com (5 years raw)
Cashews are not a raw food. They cause digestive issues, have a lot of toxins and can become addictive!
4. UNRIPE fruit – Dr. Samuel Mielcarski from DrSampt.com (15 years raw)
5. BRAGG’s LIQUID AMINOS or any other type of artificially created raw food product – Kristina Carrillo-Bucaram from FullyRaw.com (8 years raw)
If it comes in a package it is not fresh food. Bragg’s is not raw, so Kristina Bucaram suggests to simply stay away from packaged foods and go for freshly grown produce! As she describes, “Go for the thing that is one less step man-processed.”
6. CACAO – Tim Van Orden from RunningRaw.com (9 years raw)
Cacao gives Tim Van Orden frenetic energy, he does not feel “settled” and instead feels “whacked out”.
7. AGAVE – Tim Van Orden
Agave is not a raw food and has more fructose than high fructose corn syrup! While agave has 95% fructose, high fructose corn syrup has 55% fructose!
8. GARLIC – Freelee the Banana Girl from youtube.com/freelea (7 years)
Garlic gives Freelee nightmares,it burns when placed on the skin and it does not make Freelee look or feel her best.
9. JUNGLE PEANUTS – Dan McDonald from youtube.com/liferegenerator
Jungle Peanuts made Dan break out when he made a peanut sauce even though they are raw and wild!
10. The FOOD you love that doesn’t LOVE you back – Don Bennett D.A.S from Health101.org (20 years+)
Just because you love something doesn’t mean it’s going to love you back!
When you go into the raw food aisle of the store, most of those foods are not going to serve you, so do the research and find out which food you love that doesn’t love you back.
11. ANYTHING you QUESTION is RAW – Doug Graham – FoodnSport.com (35 years+)
Avoid anything you question is raw. There is no such thing as raw chocolate, raw nama shoyu, raw cashews… Stick with whole, fresh, ripe, raw, organic fruits and vegetables!
…and John Kohler himself from OKRAW…
12. GMO’d Foods
GMO‘d foods appear in packaged products and are beginning to appear in fruits and vegetables! They can be found in zucchini, corn, soy, papaya and sugar beets. One way to avoid these foods is to buy organic.
So there you have it! Now you decide for yourself. What is the one food that you avoid in your raw food diet?
